A driving licence is pivotal if you want to drive down the roads of Uttar Pradesh. The percentage of accidents in UP rose from 31.03 in 2014 to 42.57 in 2019. It is no wonder then that if you’re caught without a driver’s licence in UP, you will be charged 5000 for it.

The law might be stringent but getting your driver’s license in UP isn’t. Here are the simple steps that you need to keep in mind while applying for a driver’s license in UP: -

Eligibility Criteria for Getting a Driver’s License  in UP:

  • The age of the person applying for a driver’s licence must be eighteen and above.
  • The applicant must already own a learner’s permit or learner’s license.
  • A person is eligible for a driving license in UP after a month, or within six months of receiving their learner’s license.
  • To apply for a commercial driver’s license, a person must be 20 years of age.
  • The applicant must also be aware of the traffic rules in UP.

List of Necessary Documents:

The applicant needs age and address proof which can be done by either of the following documents:

  • Birth Certificate
  • Passport copy (attested)
  • If a government employee, a certificate issued by the employer.
  • Any education certificate.

Address Proof:

  • Passport
  • If a government employee, a certificate issued by the employer
  • Ration card
  • Voter’s ID
  • LIC policy bond

To apply for a driving license in UP, you can apply offline or online.

Offline mode:

  • Both RTO offices and registered driving schools can give you an application form.
  • Fill in the details.
  • Submit the required documents.
  • A slot will be allotted for a test on driving skills.
  • Pass the test, and you will receive the DL at your address.

For online submission, visit the website sarathi.nic.in and follow these steps:

  • Find and select the application for the new DL.
  • Fill in the details.
  • Take note of application number.
  • You will be booked for a test, where your driving skills will be tested.
  • If you pass the test, you will receive the DL at your address.
