How does one deal with the lockdown stress of kids?

Let’s face it. Lockdown stress is a real thing. Although social distancing has become the new norm, it can adversely affect your mental health and contribute to stress. While adults may have the maturity to deal with it, kids may find it easy to come out of it quickly. Some may not even be able to comprehend the reasons behind such strict measures that everyone is expected to follow. They need an age-appropriate explanation about what’s happening around them. Children respond to stress in different ways. Clinginess, anxiety, anger are some of the hints your child might drop. Make sure you notice them before it’s too late and respond to these reactions in a supportive manner. During such difficult times, children need your love and attention more than anything. Give them regular updates but don’t bombard them with the rise in the number of cases every day.   6. Teach your child to reach out for help whenever they need it. This is important because you don’t want your child to suffer in silence. Tell them that you are available anytime for them to vent out or even just talk their heart out. Listen to your child with patience and kindness.
  7. Manage your own anxiety. How you deal with your own stress of COVID19 will have a huge impact on your children. Keeping your anxiety in check will help your family navigate this crisis effectively. Don’t panic in front of your children. If you feel a bit too overwhelmed, then take a break.
  8. Let them connect with their friends virtually. If you usually don’t allow your kids to spend time on social media, you might want to change your opinion. Let them catch up with their friends. Virtual communication can help beat loneliness during such tough times.
