From December 1, 2019, The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has made FASTag mandatory for all the vehicles as a part of the Digital India initiative. All the toll payments will be collected only through FASTag (Few toll plazas across states still have a single lane which accepts cash payments) and the vehicles which enter a FASTag lane without having a FASTag will be penalized with double the fee to cross the toll.
How does a FASTag work?
FASTag is nothing but a tag that has a Radio Frequency Identification Device (RFID). This is placed on the inside of a vehicle’s windshield (usually in the top center). Whenever a vehicle crosses a toll, the FASTag reader in the toll will detect the vehicle’s tag and charge the appropriate amount from your account. The amount deducted will be sent through SMS to the user’s registered mobile number.
How does a FASTag help me?
The whole idea of implementing FASTag is to enable cashless payments and to reduce the long waiting time, especially on major National Highways. The turnaround time for this transaction is reduced drastically compared to a cash-based transaction. It also helps in saving fuel which gets wasted during idling and curb pollution to a certain extent.
How do I get a FASTag?
The Government has mandated the automakers to affix FASTag in new vehicles. If you have purchased a new vehicle recently, FASTag might already be there. For existing vehicles, FASTag can be obtained through various online and offline channels like banks, financial institutions, online payment platforms, point of sale locations near toll plazas. All you need to do is upload/submit your basic Know Your Customer (KYC) details along with your vehicle number and a copy of the registration certificate. A one time fee of Rs. 100/- will be charged for issuing the FASTag. If you have applied it online, it will arrive at your doorstep just like how you receive your other online orders. FASTag has a validity for 5 years.
How do I recharge?
You can link your FASTag either to your bank account or a prepaid account. In the case of a prepaid account, top-up can be done through UPI or by using the MyFASTag application on your mobile. For bank accounts, the banks have their own website for FASTag. You can login and recharge your FASTag using NetBanking, Credit card and Debit Card.
