Tips on Getting Transferred

New job, new place, new friends. Being transferred can be a phase full of joy and anticipation if you plan it well. Here are useful tips on how to move out of your existing home in a planned manner.

Packing
Getting started

You will need good packing items such as cardboard boxes of all sizes, large plastic bags, industrial strength packing tape (preferably the type that can be written on), permanent marker. Fragile stickers in an eye catching colour, scissors, bubble wrap or newspapers. You could use old towels and linen for packing fragile items. Begin with items that you know you definitely won't be using for some period of time. For instance, if you are moving in summer, you can pack your winter clothes first as you will not be using them for awhile. Always put heavy items in small boxes and lighter items in large boxes. Do not pack room by room instead split the contents of your home into least commonly used items and frequently used items.

Pictures

You can start off by clearing the walls. Pictures are there for decorative purposes only and you can do without them.

Bedrooms

Start with one bedroom. Pack up all the clothes that you know you won't be wearing before the move (such as wools, thick blankets, sweaters etc). Continue this process with all the bedrooms.

Bathrooms

You will find lot of stuff there you can dispose off. Half used cleaning acids. Never carry them, they may spill and cause considerable damage. Throw them away. Pack away extra supplies of toothpastes, soaps and shampoos.

Children's toys

Now is a good time to dispose off old toys. Donate them with your child’s permission. Make sure you keep your child’s favourite toys in a reachable place.

Kitchen

First take stock of what is essential for the next few weeks. Your pan, kettle, mugs, plates and ladles should be out. The rest can be packed. Crystals, fragile wine glasses, special containers etc can go in. Next take a look at the food items. Pack all those food products, which you won’t need in a hurry.

Labeling

Make sure you label the contents of all boxes. This will save you a lot of time and energy while unpacking. In fact you can even mention what content should go into which room. and which room in the new house they should end up in.

Things to do while moving

  • Get rid of clutter. Moving is a good excuse to get rid of those moldy magazines, old plates and rusting machinery.

  • Get quotes from various movers and try to get the best deal. Ask your friends for recommendations.

  • Give a change of address letter to your post office and notify your gas company and other important places.

  • Always make an inventory of your belongings before they're packed, in case you need to fill in an insurance claim later.

  • Defrost freezer and refrigerator

  • Place deodorizer inside to control odours.

  • Cancel future milk and newspaper deliveries and settle bills.

  • Once you move in, make sure you locate your nearest hospital, petrol bunk and vet.
