Tips
on Getting a New Job “Finding a job is difficult. Finding the right job in which you know you would be happy is even more difficult”- is an oft heard phrase. But it is not so. Sufficient
preparation and adequate knowledge of the job you desire can land you in your dream job. Prepare yourself well before the interview. Ask yourself the following questions before the interview.
-
Define the specific opportunity you see for yourself in the firm you are attending an
interview.
-
Is the firm healthy?
-
What is the latest achievement of the company?
-
Why would you be proud to work in that firm?
-
What is their management style and philosophy if any?
-
How will you distinguish this firm from its competitors?
-
Is it a fun place to work?
-
What is the current vision of the firm for the next 25 years?
Find out these facts for yourself and decide if you think this is the right place for you. And it would have prepared you well for the interview too.
At the interview.
-
Dress formally and comfortably. If you are comfortable wearing a tie, wear one.
Otherwise, make sure you don't feel self conscious.
- Have a confident posture. Do not slouch or stoop.
-
When you enter the interview hall, try to make eye contact with everyone in one
sweeping glance. With a small smile greet them with something like Good afternoon everybody.
-
Wait till you are asked to be seated. Without too much movement, seat yourself in the chair and say thank you. Do not keep your hands on the table.
You can keep them crossed on your lap.
- Answer questions directly and succintly.
-
If you do not know an answer to a particular question, say no, I do not know rather than giving
convoluted answers and dodging the question.
- Maintain eye contact. Look the individual directly in the eye.
- If a question appears unclear to you, ask again. Understand the question well before
answering.
- Discuss your responsibilities and make sure you focus on your achievements and strengths.
- If it is your second/third job, make sure you never ever talk ill of your current employer or colleague. It will only show YOU in bad light. Be diplomatic.
-
When money is discussed give a forthright answer. "I'm glad you brought this up. Money is important to me but it's not the most important item on my agenda. I'm really here to evaluate this opportunity and if we decide to move forward, I'll be prepared to respond to your best offer." This line always works.
-
When the interview is about to close, take the cue. Shake hands or if there are too many interviewers, thank them all and walk out with dignity. Do not bang the door.
Make sure you don't leave any of your belongings behind or drop any of them.
- Throughout the interview, be direct, brief and confident.
- All the best. Take a deep breath before and after the interview.
